Job Description

No Starch Press is expanding its Editorial department and we're seeking an experienced Acquisitions Editor. This is a fully remote position.

The No Starch Press Acquisitions Editor is an entrepreneur. You will acquire, develop, manage, and support book projects throughout the editorial process as you work to make them great. This is a creative and demanding job, requiring excellent judgment and interpersonal skills, the ability to engage with technical writing at a deep and detailed level, and the ability to track multiple projects through the manuscript development process. You must be able to work independently with minimum supervision and in close collaboration with your peers. You should have 8-10 years experience editing technical books.

You will be editing computer-focused, technical manuscripts. You will be expected to grasp technical content at a high level. You should understand the intended reader, have a vision for the scope of the book, think about how to reach your readers, and be able to independently direct and support your authors.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze markets, identify opportunities, and find great authors
  • Prepare manuscripts for production
  • Develop manuscripts for clarity, structure, and quality
  • Hire technical reviewers, manage multiple projects, and keep things on track.
  • Draft marketing copy, including back cover text

Requirements

  • Ten (10) years hands-on editing experience in technical book publishing or a related field.
  • Familiarity with technical jargon and programming terms.
  • Project management experience, ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing skills. You should be able to turn muddy technical writing into art.
  • Experience with Word, LibreOffice, and ideally LaTeX/Overleaf.
  • Bachelor's degree.
