Department Overview

The Oregon Clinical Translational Research Institute (OCTRI) at OHSU is a catalyst for scientific collaboration, translation of biomedical advances into the community, innovation and research growth in Oregon and beyond. OCTRI’s mission is to enhance the efficiency and quality of rigorously translating research ideas into impact. To accomplish our mission, our 80-90 employees spread across 13 teams provide a broad expanse of clinical and translational services that include training, funding, research support, and community engagement. The Clinical & Translational Research Center (CTRC) is both a major unit within OCTRI and an OHSU University Shared Resource (USR).  It provides essential research infrastructure and experienced research staff for over 200 clinical research protocols and leverages over $30M in external grant funding annually. These include investigator-initiated and industry sponsored studies from a broad spectrum of research disciplines, including nutrition, weight regulation, sleep medicine, neurology, cognitive neurosciences, endocrinology, aging, pediatric genetic diseases, and complementary and alternative medicine. Many of these studies require complex, interrelated research services that cannot be performed elsewhere at OHSU, including early phase experimental therapeutic interventions, sleep and circadian isolation studies, and studies that require intensive safety monitoring and pharmacokinetic sampling. 

Function/Duties of Position

The CTRC Specialty Practice Leader (SPL) is a Professional Practice Leader (PPL) who is the identified role model and content expert for clinical research nursing in the CTRC. They provide leadership in the integration of new knowledge and facilitate excellence in the provision of nursing care through the implementation of evidence-based standards of care and the Professional Practice model. The SPL utilizes their specialized knowledge and skill to positively influence outcomes within the following spheres: individual patients, clinical research protocol integrity, nurses and other multidisciplinary team members and the organization/system. They lead programs and initiatives congruent with CTRC mission and values. This position requires a master’s degree in progress, or planned.

The CTRC SPL’s decisions and actions are based on ethical principles as outlined by the American Nurses Association. The SPL practices in adherence with the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Nursing Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrators , the ANA Code of Ethics , the Oregon State Board of Nursing’s Practice Act, and within the context of the Nurse Executive Competencies developed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). The CTRC Research Specialty Practice Leader –

  • Serves as a leader in all aspects of research nursing practice. Demonstrates expertise in nursing and biomedical research processes; utilizes professional judgment in decision making; planning and providing nursing care; and evaluates research nursing practice.
  • Leads the support of new and ongoing CTRC research protocols, in collaboration with investigators, study teams, and CTRC and OCTRI leadership.
  • Implements and leads quality and safety initiatives, engages in process improvement and consultation with CTRC leadership and/or investigators
  • Manages educational and practice development programs for CTRC Nursing Services, d e signing, implementing and evaluating learning experiences for all staff levels to acquire, maintain, or increase their knowledge and competence at the unit and departmental level.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and other departmental leadership to assist with operations and management of CTRC research processes and care of research participants.
  • Role models effective leadership, outstanding communication skills, while promoting a safe, supportive and professional environment.
  • Decisions and actions are based on ethical principles as outlined by the American Nurses Association and Good Clinical Research Practice (GCP).
  • Adhere to regulatory standards, bargaining unit agreements, hospital and clinical standards of performance, and human resource management.
  • The SPL ensures a research nursing care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff.


Required Qualifications

  • BSN required
  • Master’s degree in nursing or related field, or in process also required
  • Five years of experience as a registered nurse in a related clinical area of practice
  • BLS, Nursing administration or specialty practice certification within 3 years of assuming position
  • Experience in complex organization environments
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple conflicting priorities
  • Proficient with word processing, computational spreadsheet (e.g., Excel), and presentation software
  • Unencumbered Oregon RN License


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing or related field, or in process
  • Recent formal management experience in the related area of practice
  • BLS for healthcare provider
  • Current Professional certification in nursing leadership-Nurse Executive/Administrator or
  • Professional Development or
  • specialty practice area
  • Membership with Clinical Research National Organizations and/or Professional Development National Organization
