Summary:

The Director of Global Engagement provides the vision and strategy for off-campus study that supports the College's strategic initiatives, integrates off-campus study into the Wooster experience, deepens faculty engagement, and ensures that global engagement opportunities are of high quality, accessible to all students, and aligns with institutional resources.

The Director oversees a broad array of off-campus programming, including affiliate programs, faculty-led TREK programs, exchanges, and consortia programs. The Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining partnerships across campus to maximize participation and student learning outcomes and to ensure that off-campus study offerings are reflective of student needs and interests. The Director provides leadership in the campus' response to an ever-evolving risk landscape as it impacts off-campus study and preparing students and families to make informed decisions regarding participation.

Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership:
  • Provides leadership in the development and execution of strategies that align off-campus study programs with the College's academic goals and strategic initiatives by working closely with faculty, staff, and students to maintain a portfolio of high-quality, affordable programs that best complement students' Wooster education and its career-oriented Pathway Programs.
  • Develops and manages the off-campus study budgets, balancing institutional costs with the need to make programs affordable and accessible to all students.
  • Articulates the value of international and domestic off-campus study as a vital part of a liberal arts education.
  • Leads assessment and evaluation of office, program, and student learning outcomes and the implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains knowledge of and implements best practices as established by NAFSA, The Association of International Educators, the Forum on Education Abroad, the National Society for Experiential Education, and other professional organizations.
  • Furthers the College's national and regional visibility in the education abroad field through participation in national organizations and regional consortia.
  • Coordinates with other offices including the Business Office, Financial Aid, Housing and Residential Life, and the Wellness Center in support of off-campus study in accordance with best practice.

Risk and Crisis Management:
  • Provides leadership to the institution in identifying and mitigating risks related to student, staff and faculty off-campus travel, study, and research.
  • Maintains a crisis management plan that follows best practices and assures compliance with the Clery Act, Title IX, and other pertinent federal rules and regulations.
  • Responds to students, staff, and/or faculty members experiencing emergency incidents off-campus by implementing the crisis management plan.
  • Conducts regular trainings for APEX staff and TREK faculty program directors to support effective risk and crisis management during off-campus program development and implementation.
  • Conducts informed consent meetings with student travelers and families to ensure awareness of potential risks and techniques to mitigate risk.
  • Ensures GEO application forms and processes conform to current legal standards.

Advising Services:
  • Leads the GEO team in delivering effective advising and support to the diverse body of Wooster students before, during, and following their participation in off-campus study and/or credit-bearing international internship programs. Actively works to increase access and dismantle barriers.
  • Counsels students about the way in which off-campus study, as a quintessential experiential learning opportunity, can enrich a chosen academic program, enable students to make connections between college and careers, and build career-readiness.
  • Assists students in maximizing their learning through vibrant pre-departure and re-entry programs that emphasize best practice in experiential learning and foster reflection and integration of learning outcomes into students' academic, professional, and personal goals.
  • Communicates with families as appropriate during the planning/advising process, the off- campus experience, and the reentry process.
  • Assists students with preparing scholarship applications.

Program Administration:
  • Negotiates and cultivates strong partnerships with third party providers, exchange partners, and other entities offering high-quality, affordable off-campus programs and for-credit international internships.
  • Coordinates on-campus support for these programs by hosting program representatives, arranging information meetings, organizing an annual study abroad fair, and maintaining a high-quality website and a searchable application portal.
  • Assists faculty in developing and implementing TREK programs and guide programs through the academic approval process.

Collaboration and Promotion:
  • Works collaboratively with the Geo Advisory Committee, other campus offices, and academic departments to promote a welcoming and inclusive campus climate.
  • Participates on the APEX leadership team and collaborates in APEX programming.
  • Supports recruitment efforts by presenting on off-campus study opportunities to prospective students and their families.
  • Assists the Dean of APEX in additional duties related to the work of the office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Masters degree or higher academic degree in a relevant field and a minimum of five years of administrative experience in international study or international student programs.
  • Familiarity and commitment to liberal arts education.
  • Significant experience preferred in one or more of the following: advising students or teaching in a liberal arts setting; scholarship and study of languages and culture; or international exchange with an emphasis on education and culture.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Skills:
  • Knowledge and practice of a language other than English.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Strong budget management skills and experience in securing funding.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in global education.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with TerraDotta software, email, web editing, publishing, development of written resources and training materials, and new media is preferred.
  • Position requires experience with diverse student populations, demonstration of cultural competencies, ability to manage confidential materials, skills at prioritizing projects, monitoring project calendars, and tracking tasks in progress.
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Tutoring, advising, or mentoring experience is preferred but not required.
