The collections department of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is seeking volunteers to assist in cataloging and housing collections of North American archaeological stone tools and pottery from October – December 2024.
The Collections volunteer will report to the Collections Manager, and interact with the Collections Specialist and Director of Museum Collections on a daily basis. The volunteer will have the opportunity to learn about safe object handling, cataloging, condition reporting, archival housing, and various aspects of working with a collections management system (The Museum System).
The ideal candidate will have a familiarity with North American archaeological materials. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The position requires volunteers to sit and perform data entry for long periods, as well as stand, stoop, lift, and climb. The position is unpaid.

Collection Management System: The collections database centralizes collections information and is critical to all aspects of collections management. The volunteer will learn to create and update records in The Museum System (TMS), giving them an understanding of the importance of accurate and appropriate data entry for collections information access and retrieval. Additionally, they will learn the basics of digital content management by producing/organizing files and documentary photography.
Handling: Appropriate handling methods are key to keeping objects safe. The volunteer will learn how to appropriately handle a variety of objects and pack them using a variety of methods.
Registration: Objects must be documented and tracked to be useful to staff and the public. The volunteer will learn the accessioning process, including information gathering and entry into the collections management system, as well as object numbering.
Archival Housing: Objects need to be preserved and protected. The volunteer will learn how to create archival enclosures, as well as how to house objects using various techniques and materials.
Condition Reporting: Knowing the condition of objects helps prioritize care as well as resources. The volunteer will lean how to evaluate object stability and write reports.
Minimum Requirement: Enrolled in Bachelor program for archaeology, anthropology, ethno history, art history, or history. Applicants must be detail oriented, enthusiastic, and capable of doing repetitive tasks with excellent computer skills. Knowledge of museum collections care practices is preferred.
Physical and Work Environment Demands: Ability to reach with hands and arms, stoop, and see. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry 10-50 lbs. short distances. Ability to climb step stools, carry objects up stairs, and stand for long periods of time. Ability to enter data into a computer. Wear gloves and be able to perform delicate operations when dealing with fragile objects. Have good, clear communication skills, both verbally and written, and can understand spoken communications. Most work is performed in a climate-controlled environment.
